A note from Sarah

I started Hairpip because I was curious. Deeply curious about the sheer number of long-tail ingredients on the back of my shampoo and conditioner. What did they all mean? What did they all do? How do you even pronounce them?

I was already on an environmental crusade — reducing plastic in the home, simplifying life in general. Complicated routines just had to go. Why were we shampooing and then following up with a conditioner? And why was my hair only lasting a day before I had to do it all over again?

I'd been putting so much effort into healthy ingredients on my skin and in my home. Why wasn't I doing the same for my hair?

The more I learned about haircare formulations, the more I realised — less is more. There were so many unnecessary ingredients in everyday shampoo and conditioner. Ingredients that were only there to feel a certain way, or to counteract a reaction caused by another ingredient. And they were being sold in elaborate marketing campaigns targeting different hair types — when really, if you looked closely, the formulas were almost identical.

This guide is everything I wish someone had told me. It's also everything I tell every new Hairpip customer — the technique, the honest truth about what you need and what you don't, and why being curious and keeping things simple will always win.

Read it once. Come back to it. Share it with someone who needs it.

Your hair is about to change.

— Sarah, Founder of Hairpip

Your hair deserves better.

Section 1: It's your scalp, not your hair

Most of us have spent our entire lives treating our hair. Conditioning the lengths. Targeting the ends. Worrying about shine, frizz, volume and texture.

But here's what the big shampoo brands don't want you to know: healthy hair starts at the scalp.

Your scalp is skin. Just like the skin on your face, it has a microbiome — a delicate ecosystem of oils and bacteria that, when balanced, produces hair that is strong, clean and naturally full from the root.

Most shampoos disrupt that balance. They strip the scalp with harsh ingredients — and then your scalp, in a panic, overproduces oil to compensate. That's why your hair gets greasy so fast. That's why you need to wash it so often. The shampoo is causing the very problem it promises to solve.

Hairpip works differently.

No harsh stripping agents. No unnecessary additives. No plastic bottles. Hairpip is a waterless beauty product — meaning it's formulated without water, so it comes in solid form. And because there's no water in the formula, there's no need for preservatives. Just a pH-balanced solid formula that cleanses your scalp without stripping it — and over time, allows it to find its own natural balance.

The result? Hair that stays cleaner for longer. A scalp that stops overproducing oil. Volume that comes from the root and actually stays for days.

This is what we mean by a scalp-first approach. And once you experience it, you can't go back.

"Truly blown away with the Hairpip! It lathers well and gives an excellent clean finish. You will be super impressed that your hair feels soft and manageable — good for me and good for the environment."

Section 2: The technique that changes everything

The single most important thing we can tell you: clean your scalp, not your hair.

Most people get in the shower and work shampoo through their lengths. They scrub mid-lengths and ends. They treat the hair like the problem.

With Hairpip, everything is different. The lengths take care of themselves in the rinse. Your job is the scalp.

Here's where most people go wrong:

The biggest mistake is lathering the pip or pod in your hands — building up a foam in your palms and then applying that foam to your scalp. This is how you'd use a traditional liquid shampoo: squeeze into hands, apply to hair.

With Hairpip, the product must go directly onto your scalp. Not the lather. The product itself.

Using your pip — step by step:

Wet your hair thoroughly. Take your pip and hold it snugly in the palm of your hand, toward the fingers. Wet the pip to activate it — you'll feel it start to glide.

Start at the hairline. Work the wet, activated pip directly onto your scalp — around the hairline, behind the ears, the nape of your neck, then across the top of your scalp in sections. You are putting the product directly on the scalp at every point, not building lather in your hands first.

Once you've covered the scalp with product, put the pip down. Now use the tips of your fingers — not the pads — to massage the product through your scalp and build a lather. Fingertips give you precision and pressure. Don't ruffle the hair. Don't scrub the lengths. Just work the scalp methodically. Your lengths will get what they need in the rinse.

Using your pod — step by step:

Pods are a single solid bar. Wet your hair, then rub the pod directly onto your wet scalp in the same pattern — hairline, crown, nape, sides. The pod delivers the formula directly to the scalp. No activation step, no hands first. Same technique: product on scalp, fingertips to massage, lengths in the rinse.

The lather test:

You build a lather and it disappears — or it feels light. Good. This means the formula has cut through the oil and product buildup on your scalp. It's done its job on that layer.

Rinse off and apply again. This time you should get a rich white lather that holds. That's when you know your scalp is clean.

For most people this takes one or two applications in the first few washes. As your scalp balances over time, one application is enough — because there's less buildup to cut through.

"Hairpip is a game changer. I have oily roots and dry ends so struggled to find a product that would balance my hair. Hairpip has helped balance my oily scalp, the ends are nourished, it's a one step process plus it's good for the planet. What magic is this?!"

Section 3: The adjustment period — what to expect

Some people pick up a pip and their hair transforms from the very first wash. Others need a little time.

Both are completely normal.

Your scalp has spent years — possibly decades — being stripped and over-conditioned. It has developed patterns: overproducing oil, building up residue, compensating for what conventional products have been taking away. When you switch to Hairpip, your scalp needs a few washes to unlearn those patterns.

Week 1: Your hair will feel different when wet. Not bad — just different. The wet texture will be unfamiliar. You might feel the urge to add conditioner. Resist it. Wash when you feel you need to, not on a rigid schedule.

Week 2: Most people start to notice something shifting. The time between washes may be extending slightly. The lather comes through more easily. Your scalp is starting to find its balance. If the adjustment feels uncomfortable, revisit your technique — scalp first, product directly on scalp not hands, fingertips not pads.

Week 3 and beyond: This is where most people have their moment. Softer hair. Calmer scalp. More days between washes. Less oil. For the people who push through to week three, this is the moment they call life-changing.

On conditioner:

When hair is wet, it won't feel the way conditioned hair feels. It will feel different — some people describe a slightly more textured feeling when wet. This is the absence of silicone coating the hair shaft. It is not dryness.

Trust the dry. When your hair dries — without conditioner — it will be soft. Genuinely soft. Not the artificial softness of silicone deposits. Real softness from a balanced scalp and clean hair.

If after several weeks your ends still feel dry when your hair is completely dry — your ends may simply need a trim. The hair shaft is dead. It doesn't respond to scalp health the way the root does. Dry ends are a haircut conversation, not a Hairpip problem.

Within the first few weeks I wasn't too convinced this product would work. My hair felt a little dry at the ends, and as tempting as it was to use my salon products again I kept persisting. I can honestly say, after a good while, this product is probably better than salon treatments."

Section 4: Every hair type — what to expect

One formula. Every scalp.

All Hairpip formulas share the same base — the only difference between them is the scent and essential oil combination. So choose whichever appeals to you most. You genuinely cannot choose wrong.

This is intentional. We built one formula for scalp health — and every scalp responds to the same thing: being treated gently, without harsh stripping agents, without silicone buildup.

Oily scalp: Almost always a symptom of disruption, not genetics. Once you break the strip-and-compensate cycle, most people move from washing daily to every three or four days.

"I have oily roots and dry ends. Hairpip has balanced my oily scalp and the ends are nourished. One step process. What magic is this?!" — Melissa W. ★★★★★

Itchy, flaky or sensitive scalp: If you've been living with an uncomfortable scalp and assuming it's just your hair type — it probably isn't. Most itchy and flaky scalps are a reaction to harsh ingredients stripping the scalp's natural barrier. Many customers who had suffered for years found their scalp settled completely within a few weeks of switching.

"I've had an itchy scalp my whole life and just thought that was me. It's gone." — Verified buyer ★★★★★

Curly and wavy hair: Curly hair customers are consistently among our most passionate converts. Curls bounce back more naturally, hair dries faster, and the weight that used to pull curls flat disappears.

"My hair is very curly and thirsty for moisture. Now it feels so clean after a wash, dries very fast, curls bounce up naturally." — Leanne A. ★★★★★

Colour-treated hair: Hairpip does not strip colour. Without harsh sulphates coating the hair shaft, colour sits more vibrantly and lasts longer between appointments.

"My hair has been professionally coloured and bleached for many years. I can't believe the results — clean, shiny, soft." — Caroline E. ★★★★★

Fine and thinning hair: Without silicone weighing the hair down, fine hair lifts naturally from the root and stays there. Volume that actually lasts — several of our male customers have noted the fullness they've noticed since switching.

"Leaves my hair soft and with better volume. Ticks all the boxes." — Moyna S. ★★★★★

Swimmers and active people: This one is personal. I swim every day. Before Hairpip I had to wash my hair after every swim — otherwise the conditioner buildup would make it lie flat and heavy. Now I rinse off and my hair bounces back. No wash needed. For gym-goers, swimmers and active people, the freedom from daily washing is one of Hairpip's most unexpected benefits.

"I live on the beach. After a day in the surf, washing with a pip leaves my hair so soft and clean." — Claire M. ★★★★★

Kids and families: Safe for all ages. No harsh stripping agents, no parabens. Keep it away from eyes — that's the only rule. Many Hairpip families have replaced every member's shampoo and conditioner with one product.

"We leave some Hairpip near the outdoor shower for the whole family to use after a swim. Works well!" — Verified buyer ★★★★★

I was extremely sceptical about a product that claimed to not need conditioner — but here I am, a few weeks in and I'm sold. My hair has never been softer."

Section 5: Storage, travel and everyday use

High and dry — always.

Hairpip is a waterless formula. This is intentional — when there's no water in a formula, there's no need for preservatives. Waterless beauty is better for your scalp, better for the environment, and better for the longevity of your product.

But waterless does mean one thing: Hairpip cannot sit in water between uses.

The rule is simple. High and dry.

Keep your pip or pod somewhere it can drain and air-dry between washes. A soap dish with drainage, a wooden shelf, a loofah riser — anywhere that allows water to drain and air to circulate. Never leave it sitting in a puddle. Never store it in an airtight container while it's damp.

Why? A wet environment without preservatives allows bacteria to develop. If your pip or pod stays wet for extended periods it will soften, get stuck in your hair, deteriorate faster, and may develop mould. Keep it dry and it will last beautifully.

For travel:

When you're done in the shower, dry your pip or pod off with a towel before packing. A cotton bag — an upcycled jewellery bag, a small drawstring in any natural fibre — is perfect for travel. Pop the dry pip or pod in, and your entire hair routine is done. No liquids. No 100ml rule. No heavy bottles.

The sticking hack:

When your pip gets small, don't throw the end piece away. Wet a fresh pip and press your used pip firmly against it. Hold for thirty seconds. They'll bond together into one larger, more manageable piece with zero waste.

The same applies to pods — when your pod gets small, press it against a new pod while both are wet. They'll merge seamlessly.

If you prefer a larger pip from the start, wet several pips together and press them into a bigger bar. Some customers make a 3-4 pip bar specifically for long or thick hair.

How often should you wash?

Wash when your scalp tells you it needs it. Not on a schedule.

As your scalp balances, your washing cadence will naturally extend. People who washed daily move to every second day, then every third, sometimes longer. Let your scalp lead.

One note: if you use styling products, dry shampoo or conditioner alongside Hairpip, your washing cycle will be more frequent — because those products create the buildup that Hairpip cuts through. The more exclusively you use Hairpip, the longer your hair stays clean.

"I used it as shampoo, conditioner and body wash. My hair and body felt and smelt amazing. Great for travelling or the gym — so small and convenient." — Teresa T. ★★★★★

"Given to my travelling cabin crew friends. The perfect shampoo and body wash for an overnight trip." — Kirsten S. ★★★★★
